Research Scholarships for Doctoral Students under the Unite! Widening Initiative

The University of Lisbon (ULisboa) intends to award 7 PhD Scholarships under the Unite!Widening Project.

The Unite!Widening Industry-Embedded Doctoral School aims to directly support doctoral students conducting research in one of the four Strategic Areas selected by the project, namely:

  • Health & Biotech
  • Urban & Resources Sustainability
  • Circular Economy & Materials
  • Digital & Autonomous Technologies

The research must involve a collaboration with an industrial partner (with a minimum stay of 3 months) and take place under the academic co-supervision of a supervisor affiliated with a Unite! Alliance university located in a non-Widening country (including a stay of at least 6 months), from the list below:

Application Deadline
The call is open from 20 June to 26 July 2025.

Admission Requirements
Students holding a Master’s degree in the field of Science and Technology, enrolled in a PhD program, in the same field, integrated into the educational project of ULisboa or one of its Schools. Preference will be given to candidates who have:

  1. Experience in developing scientific activities.
  2. Experience in scientific research projects.
  3. Experience in preparing scientific presentations.

Form of Application
Applicants must submit a doctoral project that:

  1. It is aligned with at least one of the strategic areas of the Unite!Widening project.
  2. Identifies at least one scientific supervisor, either a professor or a career researcher holding a PhD, from the University of Lisbon.
  3. Identifies a co-supervisor from a Unite! Alliance university located in a non-Widening country from the list above.
  4. Includes an active or planned collaboration with an industrial partner.
  5. Includes a Work Plan to be developed within the chosen strategic area, with a maximum of 2 pages, structured into the following sections: Title, Abstract, State of the Art, Objectives, Detailed Description, and Bibliographic References.
  6. Includes a Timeline with the proposed schedule of tasks and key milestones to be achieved.

Applicants must also submit all other documentation specified in section 3.4 of the Call Notice, complete the application form available on the call’s webpage, and send the full application by email to candidaturas.rh@reitoria.ulisboa.pt, indicating the reference of the scholarship being applied for.

Selection Methods
The evaluation process will consider:

a) Relevance of the project to the strategic area (20%)

b) Innovative nature of the project concept (30%)

c) Scientific cooperation with a Unite! Alliance university (10%)

d) Involvement of the research project in addressing industrial challenges (20%)

e) Scientific achievements and motivation of the candidate (20%)

Each application will be evaluated by a designated jury. The criteria will be scored on a scale from 0 to 5 points. The final score will be calculated as a weighted sum based on the importance of each criterion.

Duration of the Scholarship and Monthly Allowance

The scholarship will last for 12 months, starting on 1 October 2025, under an exclusive dedication regime, and may be renewed for up to a maximum of 36 months until the end of the project (31 December 2028).

The scholarship amount is set at a monthly rate of €1,810.00, which is intended to cover annual tuition fees as well as costs associated with the industrial placement and the stay at the academic partner in the non-Widening country.
